Photography is – part seven

If you ask me how long it took to make a single photo, my answer would be, my entire life. You can’t decide to pull something out of context.
A photo always has a context, even when it is not obvious or conscious.
Photography involves the whole being.

  1. This would be a marvelous photo in any case, but what strikes me in particular is the oddity of the phone. She seems to be talking into the edge of it, as people do now, communicating to someone somewhere in a way that still seems surreal, despite its ubiquity. And of course the phone is also a camera, which lets us see as well as say and hear. The transparency of the umbrella works wonders here.

What you wrote brings to mind a recent post of mine with these lines from Ansel Adams: “You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”
